Pablo's Story: From Venezuela to Guatemala, in search of better opportunities

Actualizado: 1 ago

Acquiring residency in Guatemala is challenging for some nationalities, particularly Venezuelans. After the breakup of diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Guatemala, obtaining some required documents to apply for residency is very difficult.

Pablo left Venezuela and came to Guatemala to escape the poor economic and political conditions in his home country. Despite numerous attempts to obtain the necessary documentation to regularize his migratory status, he was unable to do so. During his time in Guatemala, he became the father of a daughter who is a national minor.

In Guatemala, if you have Guatemalan relatives in a close degree, you have the right to get a residence. However, even though Pablo is the father of a Guatemalan national, due to the unavailability of some necessary documents, Pablo has been unable to apply for his rightful residence. As a result of the situation, Pablo overstayed in Guatemala and incurred an administrative fine of approximately USD 5,000.00.

The GTD Impact Foundation intervened and connected Pablo with our partner legal team in Guatemala who filed a legal action with a request for a waiver of the fine to the President of Guatemala. The payment of the fine (or its forgiveness) is required to file the residency paperwork.

With great success we obtained a waiver by the President. Mr Bernardo Arévalo

and assisted Pablo in representing him in his residency case.

We are now just waiting on the immigration office so that Pablo's migratory situation will finally be regularized, and his family will be able to stay unified!

We are so happy with these results! Check out the resolution from the President here:
